The variants alpha in the U.K. and delta in India are more contagious than the previous ones; but lambda is coming. It quickly spread to Perù, where the first cases were discovered in August 2020, and then to South America. It then emigrated to North America and Europe. WHO waited nearly a year to sound the alarm on June 14th.
Nobody knows if the western vaccines Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca are effective. The Chinese ones, Sinovac and Sinopharm, show little validity in South America. The University of Chile in Santiago stated that in health workers vaccinated with two Sinovac doses lambda "confer increased infectivity and immune escape from neutralizing antibodies". There is also a lack of data on the efficacy of Chinese vaccines in the delta; but in general the Sinovac according to the Brazilians works at 50.4% and the Sinopharm according to the United Arab Emirates is useful at 86%. However, it should be remembered that no vaccine today protects 100% from the virus.
The United States is moving towards reintroducing restrictions this fall. Delta will cause new cases especially in states with less widespread vaccination, making masks and distancing necessary again.
The tragic carousel of variants will last 2-3 years of pandemic. The curfew has already been reintroduced in Australia, South Africa, Asian nations.
Walmart, Costco, the automakers, Goldman Sachs have exempted workers and customers from the mask if fully vaccinated. Apple, Amazon, Citigroup, JP Morgan want their employees back to the office.
Antony Fauci from the White House suggests that fully vaccinated people also wear face shields where transmission is high, for example Mississippi.
