Infectious disease experts say treatments are also needed to eradicate covid. Current vaccines give partial immunity, are experimental, no one knows if and what negative effects they could produce in the long term, except the pharmaceutical manufacturers. Hydroxychloroquine, used with US President Donald Trump who was cured, was rejected by some; while the cheap steroid dexamethasone and tocilizumab for arthritis have been promoted, saving lives.
Singapore's Health Science Authority (HSA) has just provisionally authorized GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology antibody sotrovimab for over 18-years-old with moderate covid, available from September. It is based on monoclonal antibodies, which are lab-made proteins that mimic the immune system's ability to reject harmful antigens such as viruses. Singapore is looking into a similar treatment from Regeneron Pharmaceutical, which will be used as it becomes available, according to the local National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID). This antibody cocktail was used positively in October 2020 for Donald Trump and approved by Recovery scientists, cited above.
Professor Sophia Archuleta of the National University Hospital (NUS) in Singapore explains that there are two therapies: one attacks the virus, for example with antivirals and monoclonal antibodies; the other addresses the body's inflammatory response, for example with steroids and immune modulators. According to prof. Fisher of NSU, inflammatory corticosteroids prevent deaths and serious illness; while sotromivab with monoclonal antibodies is only useful for mild forms of covid. Dr. Shawn Vasoo, director of NCID, confirms that the treatments have contributed to Singapore's low mortality rate, pointing out that the main cause of deaths worldwide is still insufficient beds, ventilators, oxygen.
