The American House of Representatives voted to pass a law that would ban Tik Tok unless its owners sell the company. Chinese national security laws require Chinese-owned companies to assist the government in intelligence-gathering. 150 million American users can be surveilled and manipulated.
But US government's recent history of collusion with private companies to surveil American citizens, suppress dissent, and de-bank individuals and organizations based on disfavored political or religious ideology raises the question: if Tik Tok ended up under American ownership, would its users be jumping out of the wok and into the fire?
An astonishing report of March detailed how officials at the US Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network colluded with America's largest banks, including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and others, to monitor their customers' financial transactions in search of potential domestic terrorists.
Among the suggested criteria were transactions with stores like Cabela's (hunting, fishing, boating, camping, recreation et al.) and Dick's Sporting Goods; purchases of religious texts; and so-called "hate groups" like religious and conservative organizations like Alliance Defending Freedom, Family Research Council, Pacific Justice Institute, Liberty Counsel, Ruth Institute (international interfaith coalition).
The federal regulations on American financial institutions provide more than enough of a threat to coerce them into actions on behalf of the government that the government cannot do itself without running afoul of the Constitution. Coupled with the positive incentive of taxpayer-funded financial bailouts when bank that are "too big to fail" do just that, the federal government has both carrot and stick.
Regardless of whether government intervenes in the market to protect Americans from a foreign surveillance state, it must certainly take a long look in the mirror at its own.

La Camera dei Rappresentanti americana ha votato per approvare una legge che vieterà Tik Tok a meno che i suoi proprietari non vendano l’azienda. Le leggi cinesi sulla sicurezza nazionale impongono alle società di proprietà cinese di assistere il governo nella raccolta di informazioni. 150 milioni di utenti americani possono essere sorvegliati e manipolati.
Ma la recente storia di collusione del governo degli Stati Uniti con aziende private per sorvegliare i cittadini americani, reprimere il dissenso e applicare restrizioni bancarie a persone e organizzazioni basate su ideologie politiche o religiose indesiderate solleva la domanda: se Tik Tok finisse sotto la proprietà americana, i suoi utenti salterebbero dalla padella alla brace?

I regolamenti federali sulle istituzioni finanziarie americane rappresentano una minaccia più che sufficiente per costringerle ad azioni per conto del governo che il governo non può compiere da solo senza entrare in conflitto con la Costituzione. Insieme all’incentivo positivo dei salvataggi finanziari finanziati dai contribuenti quando le banche “troppo grandi per fallire” fanno proprio questo, il governo federale ha sia la carota che il bastone.
Indipendentemente dal fatto che il governo intervenga nel mercato per proteggere gli americani da uno stato di sorveglianza straniera, esso stesso dovrebbe certamente guardarsi a lungo allo specchio.
